About The Breed

Yutori began in 1989 with Akitas and in May 2005 a friend and I decided to get involved in Finnish Lapphunds, too. They appealed to us because of their beautiful looks and wonderful personalities. This is a breed that is happy, extremely intelligent yet willing to please, and non-aggressive. They have a joy in life and enthusiasm that is infectious. They are roughly 35-40lbs and 17-19 inches tall with a deviance of 1 inch on each side. There are no size disqualifications--balance is the key. The breed is comparatively healthy, with an average lifespan of 12 to 15 or even 16 years not being uncommon. Their health concerns include PRA (for which a genetic blood test is now available through Optigen), hip dysplasia (low frequency), and although occurences are rare, there have been cases of epilepsy (more in strictly herding bloodlines), hypothyroidism and autoimmune skin disease. Finnish Lapphunds are a spitz relative, used for herding reindeer. Due to extremely careful breeding practices within the breed and selective importation to date, by Finnish Lapphund breeders in the USA thus far, we only know of one Finnish Lapphund identified in the United States that is affected by PRA. A rare breed, Lappies number roughly 285 dogs in the US at the time of this writing. The breed numbers climb every year with a few more litters born, and FL breeders in the US hope to receive AKC recognition very soon. IF you are interested in this breed, we recommend that you apply for memembership in the Finnish Lapphund Club of America (FLCA).

About Our Dogs

Yutori Finnish Lapphunds now includes 8 Lappies: multi-breed BIS UKC Gr. Ch. Sugarok Dif'rent Drummr AOM, 'Haalia' (female); UKC Grand Ch. Sugarok Tenacious 'Tina' (female); UKC Grand Ch. Orso-Farm Naappero 'Dancer' (male) co-owned with Linda Marden of Sugarok, UKC Ch. Sugarok Mocha Latte at Yutori 'Latte', UKC Ch. Sugarok Out N' About Yutori 'Sony' and our newest Lappy a direct import from Peikovuoren Kennels in Finland. Her name is Peikkovuoren Niiskuneiti, and we are extremely happy to have her here. She is a 3-way co-ownership between Cathy Pollack and Lynn Drumm of Yutori, and Gloria Beaudin of Shadagrace in Canada. Our Lappies represent a variety of European import bloodlines: such as Peikkovuoren, Orso-Farm, Lumiturpa, Viksalan, Lecibsin, Lapinlumon, Fidelis, Shacal, Staalon, etc.

Recently, we have added two new babies to our ranks: Yutori's Howlin at Autumn Moon 'Finnegan' (male) and Yutori's Autumn Equinox 'Quinn' (female). Sired by UKC Gr. Ch. Sugarok Teddy Bear, CGC, TDI, HIC out of UKC Gr. Ch. Sugarok Tenacious. Both of these puppies are black and tan and we have high hopes for them when they grow up. We are fortunate that all of this litter will be staying in the Great-Lakes area and five of the puppies will be right here in Wisconsin. Finnegan and Quinn's own pages will be coming soon.

About Us

Cathy Pollack has shown and bred Akitas since 1989. Prior to that, she entered the dog show world in 1985 when she began showing Rottweilers for a friend and then obtained two Rotties of her own. In 1989 she acquired an Akita. She has bred a number of AKC champion Akitas and has Akitas of her breeding located all over the Great Lakes and Mid-West (see the Yutori Akitas webpage). She is a member of the Board of Directors (the Secretary) for our National Breed Club, the FLCA (The Finnish Lapphund Club of America). She also is a member of the ACA (Akita Club of America) participating as a member of their Public Education Committee, as well as having written a published article on evaluating Akitas for show quality for the Hofflin Press publication, Akita World.

Lynn Drumm has had a lifelong love of photography. She is a sports, nature and animal photographer. She has been published in a variety of calendars and magazines as well as hanging on library walls. She participates in photography competitions and documents her life and those around her at every turn, much to the chagrin of her niece and nephew. She has owned and shared her life with two very special, well known Akitas named Issho and Yoshi. Issho has several published articles about her life, and has taught the dog world many things about vaccinations and how they affect the immune system. "On that journey, Issho showed me many things during her valiant life and although her passing broke my heart, she did not live in vain. Her story is here." Back in the early 1990's Yoshi taught the veterinary community about Paecilomyces, a rare fungal infection by being the the 4th known case and in fact the only surviving case. She lived to be 13 years old.

Lynn is a member of the FLCA and is the Membership Chair for that club. Besides Lapphunds, she also shares her life with another special longcoat Akita named Amasa and a magical little Pomeranian, named Lily.

In their spare time, Lynn and Cathy take rides on our scooters and try to haul their cameras along to catch those lucky shots that always show up when there is no camera to catch them.

Our Philosphy

Our philosophy is to breed the best to the best. To that end, we will be breeding only dogs who have been PRA tested, (via Optigen if both parents are not already clear through Optigen genetic testing), and CERF'd for eye disease. Additionally our dogs will have OFA'd hips and sound knees, as well as a full thyroid panel prior to breeding. Although thyroid disease is not a common problem in this breed, there are a few dogs that have tested low. Our experience in Akitas has convinced us to monitor our Lapphunds also--to keep the incidence low. Correct Lapphund temperament with sound conformation, structure and proper breed type are very important factors we look for before we will consider breeding..

To the Prospective Buyer:

Our companions are sold only on a spay/neuter contract. Our show quality pups are sold on a showing contract and as such are required to be shown. We require an interview with prospective owners, and a questionnaire is to be filled out. A deposit of $200 holds a puppy once you have been approved. If we accept a deposit and reserve a puppy for you, but you change your mind, the deposit is forfeit. If we do not have a puppy for you, the deposit will be returned.
