Do you value your civil rights? Did you know your ability to own a purebred dog of your choice, or ANY DOG AT ALL is now in jeopardy at this very moment? Legislation is now being introduced at the national, regional, and local levels throughout this country under the guise of 'animal welfare' and it is challenging the very right to the ownership of dogs. Want to learn more? http://www.akc.org/canine_legislation/ has an up-to-date roundup of proposed legislation across the country. Information at http://www.naiaonline.org can help you fight the unfair, unreasonable laws being proposed in your area.

A Great Start--How We Raise Our Puppies

We only breed on a limited basis, and only with an eye to producing the best quality, bearing in mind the strengths and weaknesses of our cherished companion dogs. All of our dogs are house dogs, living closely with us and very much involved in our daily life. When we do have a litter, our puppies are raised in the kitchen, where we put up a whelping box when the mother is due. In this way, our puppies are in the center of the house where they are exposed to the sights, scents and sounds of an active household with the sounds of television, stereo, dishwasher, microwave and vacuum. We socialize our puppies with young kids, teens, the elderly and people with disabilities, before they go to their new homes. In particular, we utilize the proven superdog conditioning used by the military as well as guide dog and assistance dog trainers, known as ENS training. ENS has a monumental effect on the stability, recovery from stress and mental well-being of a puppy, carrying forward into its adult years. We began this method of puppy raising on recommendation of our reproductive vet; also a breeder and exhibitor. Yutori puppies bounce back from a scare in seconds, and approach new and potentially scary situations with a calm and confident air that is exceptional. An independent litter evaluator told us after testing our first litter for conformation and temperament, that this was the most consistent and stable litter of any breed that she had ever evaluated. We will continue using this method of conditioning and imprinting in all future Yutori litters.

About The Breed

Yutori began in 1989 with Akitas, after being in Rottweilers from 1985. Then in May 2005, a friend and I decided to get involved in Finnish Lapphunds. Our Yutori Akitas have all passed on now; and in 2005 we were looking for a smaller breed. They appealed to us because of their beautiful looks and wonderful personalities. This is a breed that is happy, extremely intelligent yet willing to please, and non-aggressive. They have a joy in life and enthusiasm that is infectious. They are roughly 35-40lbs and 17-19 inches tall with a deviance of 1 inch on each side. There are no size disqualifications--balance is the key. The breed is comparatively healthy, with an average lifespan of 12 to 15 or even 16 years not being uncommon. Their health concerns include PRA (for which a genetic blood test is now available through Optigen), hip dysplasia (low frequency), and although occurences are rare, there have been cases of epilepsy (more in strictly herding bloodlines), hypothyroidism and autoimmune skin disease. Finnish Lapphunds are a spitz relative, used for herding reindeer. Due to extremely careful breeding practices within the breed and selective importation to date, by Finnish Lapphund breeders in the USA thus far, we only know of one Finnish Lapphund identified in the United States that is affected by PRA. A rare breed, Lappies number roughly 285 dogs in the US at the time of this writing. The breed numbers climb every year with a few more litters born, and FL breeders in the US hope to receive AKC recognition very soon. IF you are interested in this breed, we recommend that you apply for memembership in the Finnish Lapphund Club of America (FLCA).

Something We Are Very Proud Of

Four of the puppies in our first litter were AKC CGC titled just after turning 6 months of age, 1 was a BIS puppy winner, another earned a Reserve BIS adult win in her first weekend out, and all 6 earned UKC show Championships before 1 year of age. Now, 3 of them (Quinn, Leif and Finn have earned their Grand Champion titles). All 6 of our puppies have also earned their AKC HIC herding titles (HIC) before their first birthdays as well. This litter was the first UKC all champion multiple puppy Finnish Lapphund litter (6 puppies), making Tina the dam, and Teddy the sire, the first two Finnish Lapphunds to produce an all champion multi-titled litter in North America.

About Us

We are both members of the National breed club, the FLCA. I (Cathy) have shown and bred Akitas since 1989. Prior to that, I got involved in the dog show world in Oregon, in 1985 when I began showing Rottweilers for a friend and then obtained two Rotties of my own. In 1989 I acquired an Akita. I have bred a number of AKC champion Akitas and has Akitas of my breeding are located all over the Mid-West. I am a member of the Board of Directors (the Secretary) for our National Breed Club, the FLCA (The Finnish Lapphund Club of America). I'm also a member of the ACA (Akita Club of America) participating as a member of their Public Education Committee, as well as having written a published article on evaluating Akitas for show quality for the Hofflin Press publication, Akita World.

Lynn Drumm has had a lifelong love of photography. She is a sports, nature and animal photographer. She has been published in a variety of calendars and magazines as well as hanging on library walls. She participates in photography competitions and documents her life and those around her at every turn, much to the chagrin of her niece and nephew. She used to share her life with two very special, well known Akitas named Issho and Yoshi. Issho has several published articles about her life, and has taught the dog world many things about vaccinations and how they affect the immune system. "On that journey, Issho showed me many things during her valiant life and although her passing broke my heart, she did not live in vain. Her story is here." Back in the early 1990's Yoshi taught the veterinary community about Paecilomyces, a rare fungal infection by being the the 4th known case and in fact the only surviving case. She lived to be 13 years old.

Lynn is a member of the FLCA and is the Membership Chair for that club. Besides Lapphunds, she also shares her life with another special longcoat Akita named Amasa and a magical little Pomeranian, named Lily.
